I have a Synology DS1513 attached to it (storing my media files), and a Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300. I’ll probably upgrade to a new iMac soon though. I usually updated my Mac’s every there years, but the DYI 3TB Fusion Drive added a few years to the life of my iMac. My main Mac is a 2011, 27"iMac with a DYI Fusion Drive. Spare phone: My ‘Music Phone/iPod’ (no room on my main iPhone) is a 3GS (32GB, iOS 6) goes everywhere with me, and I also use it when I don’t want to drop/break/loose my iPhone 5. Phone: My phone is an iPhone 5 (16GB, iOS 8), used for the normal phone things, though I do use my iPad more than my phone. ’Work iPad’ : I have an iPad Mini 2 (16GB, iOS 9) that I use to teach people how to use an iPad. IPad: I have an ageing iPad 2 (64GB, 3G, iOS 8) is used mainly for light tasks (email, safari, email, twitter, Facebook, reading and a huge number of other things), but also goes to uni with me where I use it for note taking, watching lectures, research, essay writing etc. Secondary Mac: My early 2008 White Macbook (256GB OWC SSD, 2.4GHZ C2D, 6GB RAM, OSX 10.7.5/Windows 10) gets used as a Windows 10 machine and also as a Mac for various other purposes. I have a Asus monitor for my desk where it becomes my desktop Mac as well. This will probably change.Main Mac: A 2 month old, 2012 Non Retina Macbook Pro 13 inch (1TB EVO 850 SSD, 2.9GHZ i7, 8GB RAM, OSX 10.10.5/Windows 7). I was wondering why so few manufacturers produce Lap Docks, but then realized that only a very small percentage of Windows computers has USB-C ports that support DP Alt Mode. The workaround was 100% reliable so it's not that big of an issue for me. However, there is no way to upgrade the firmware today (HP servers hosting the updates are said to be shut down). I don't know what firmware is installed on my Lap Dock there might have been an updated firmware that works more reliably. Wait until connection screen appears on Lap Dock.Reset Lap Dock (hold power key on left side until HP logo appears on Lap Dock). There seems to be some issues with display signal negotiation. The Lap Dock's screen sometimes stayed black after connecting the Mac mini. Touchpad works (but isn't as good as the one on the MacBook).Keyboard works layout is properly recognized. ![]() Screen works perfectly in (see workaround below). For charging, the USB-C power source must be connected to one of the two USB-C port on the righthand side of the Lap Dock.I've bought a used HP Elite x3 Lap Dock for around $100 and it's fabulous! Absolutely perfect for troubleshooting a headless Mac mini.Ĭable: 2m USB-C cable (USB 3.1/10Gbps with support for DP Alt Mode with Mac mini must be connected to the USB-C port on the left side of the Lap Dock Unfortunately, such a product doesn't seem to exist. A USB-C-Dongle with an ethernet port that provides IP-based KVM would be great, too.It would be even better if there was a way to use a MacBook as a hardware-based "Lap Dock", but I haven't found any way to do that. While this concept was created to turn a smartphone into a "full computer", it would also be great for quickly troubleshooting a headless Mac mini.ĭoes anyone use a Lap Dock with a Mac mini? If so, what model/year?ĭoes everything (display, keyboard, touchpad, etc.) work as expected?Ĭan it be powered with the same USB-C cable that carries video/data? There seems to be such a thing as a "Lap Dock" (basically a laptop without a CPU). Software-based solutions (VNC, Luna, Duet) require a running system. at boot), it's hard to troubleshoot them. They sometimes are in a small rack and run headless (no monitor or keyboard/mouse attached).
